Halloween is becoming one of my favorite times of the year!
With that, I wanted to create something that I could put out a little earlier in the season, leaving even more time to enjoy it. I decided making a neutral doormat would be the perfect thing! It adds a little splash of spooky season to the pumpkins and plaids of fall, but isn’t too Halloween-y just yet.
The best part of this DIY? You won’t need any fancy templates or cutting machines because we are going to create this doormat with just a cookie cutter!
Yes, you read that right — grab those old cookie cutters and let’s get started.

How to
Step 1 | For this project, you will be using a plain coir doormat. These mats are inexpensive, making them perfect for customizing each season — though be aware these fibers do shed and can make a little bit of a mess.
To create the designs, use an old cookie cutter or you can grab a set at the store for a few dollars. You will also need white craft paint, a stiff brush and spray sealer.
Step 2 | If you want to plan out your design first, trace the cookie cutters onto plain paper and cut them out. Play around with the pieces until you find a pattern you like, then use tape to keep them in place.
Step 3 | When you are ready to start, add the white craft paint to a plate and dip in the cookie cutter. Remove one of the paper designs and press the cookie cutter into its place. With the cutter pressed down, wiggle it slightly to get the paint onto the coir fibers.
Step 4 | Remove the cookie cutter from the mat and use your stiff paintbrush to fill in the design with more paint. Repeat until your design is done!
Step 5 | Add multiple coats of paint if needed and finish with a clear spray sealant.
