Have you been thinking of getting a Kindle but keep putting it off because you’ll also have to pay for the books you actually want to read?

Or are you already a Kindle girly but didn’t know you could get free books on your device without any type of subscription?

Well I’m here to tell you it’s possible and it’s super easy! Grab your Kindle and your phone and let’s get started!

How to get free books on your Kindle

Setting up the Libby app

Download the “Libby” app on your phone.

Open the app and add your library card. If you do not have a library card, stop by your local branch for a free card. You may also be able to sign up online and receive your card number electronically, like I did, so check your branch’s website too!

Once you have your library card info filled out, you can start borrowing books!

Using the app

Browse through popular books, just added and other categories or use the search tab to find the book you are interest in.

On the book’s page, you will either be able to borrow the book right away or it will say “Place Hold” and let you know about how long the hold is, how many copies are in use and how many people are waiting ahead of you for each copy. You are able to have 25 loans and 25 holds.

When a book you placed on hold is ready, you will receive a notification. You can then borrow the book or you can have it delivered later. This will keep your hold on the book and send it back to you to borrow in however many days you choose.

Getting books to your Kindle

Go to the Shelf tab. Click on “Actions” in the top right corner. Click on “Read Books With…” and select “Kindle”. Your books will now be sent to your Kindle when you borrow them.

Now you are officially ready to borrow a book! Click “Borrow” then you will see either “Open Book” if you just searched and borrowed it or “Read With Kindle” if you are on your shelf tab. Either way, this will take you to Amazon and you just need to click “Get Library Book”. Make sure you are signed in with the account your Kindle is registered with.

The book has now been sent to your Kindle! Open your Kindle, hit refresh and start reading! Books will automatically be returned after your loan period ends or you can return it early through the Shelf tab on your Libby app.

Happy reading!
