All you’ll need is some flannel fabric and a roll of iron-on fusing tape. That’s right, this is a no-sew DIY! Customize each bandana you make without needing to sew a thing. You can even make reversible bandanas like I did for my dogs this fall — read this post for a how-to!
Now, go pick out some cute flannel and start crafting — happy howlidays!
WHAT YOU WILL NEED
PLAID FLANNEL FABRIC | SCISSORS | TAPE MEASURE | IRON-ON FUSING WEB | FABRIC GLUE
HOW TO
STEP 1
Measure your pet’s neck. Add 6-8″ to that measurement to create extra length for tying the bandana.
Both of my dogs’ had a neck size of 22″, so I planned on the bandana being 30″ wide.
STEP 2
Next, figure out the height of the bandana (from the center of the neck to the point) based on your pet’s size. This measurement could be anywhere from 4-15″.
I chose a length of 11″ for my dogs, which ended up being a great fit. The fabric had room for bunching without looking too small. If you are unsure what size to go with, make the bandana larger and then you can always roll or fold it to a smaller size!
STEP 3
With those two measurements, cut a rectangular piece out of the fabric. Make sure to add extra length so you can fold the edges over later.
For example, I wanted my finished bandanas to be 11″ tall x 30″ wide. I added 0.5″ to each side to leave room for finishing the edges, so the measurement I cut out of the fabric was 12″ x 31″.
STEP 4
Fold your rectangular piece of fabric in half.
Cut a straight line diagonally from one corner to the other. You should now have a triangle shaped bandana!
STEP 5
You’ll only need to use one layer of fabric for this no-sew DIY!
Fold the edges over and iron. Then, take the iron-on fusing tape and place in-between the fold to bond the fabric together. You may need to cut the width of the tape down to fit.
You now have a simple, finished no-sew bandana for your pet!
STEP 6
I wanted to spice up the plain bandanas, so I grabbed the fabric scraps and started cutting out some fun embellishments!
For one pair, I cut out letters to add my pups names along the side, using fabric glue to attach.
If you plan on washing the bandanas, try using felt or iron-on letters as these scraps will likely start to fray after some use.
I also made a pair with a contrasting faux collar.
This one was super easy! I just cut a rectangle out of the scraps, folded the edges over and ironed flat. Then, I added the rectangle to the neck of the bandana and bonded using the fusing tape.
I actually really loved how these turned out because they created a faux reversible look without the extra weight of a second layer of fabric!
These bandanas were so simple to make and the fusing tape is pretty addicting since it’s so easy to use! Have fun re-creating this DIY for your pets every season!
