Organizing is probably my favorite thing to do in my home!

Having an organized space — whether it is a small drawer, cabinet or entire room — not only provides a designated place for all of your things, but also helps with the flow of your day-to-day tasks. And, not to mention, it is so satisfying and calming to look at!

One spot in my home that has needed some serious attention is the closet in my office.

As renters, we can’t change much about our space, so a small rental-friendly organization project will have to do!

BINS & CONTAINERS

I started out with two white shelves from IKEA and put them together on one side of the closet. Since we have sliding closet doors, this set up allows me to reach all of the supplies I use at the same time.

These shelves are a perfect fit for my space. They are shallow enough that I can easily pull out all of the containers and they still fit right under the built-in wire shelf already in the closet.

For the majority of my craft supplies, I used eight of these white storage boxes, which are also from IKEA. These containers hold items that I don’t need very often but still want to easily access for projects like fabrics, paints, paper goods and beads.

On the next shelf, I used these clear all-purpose bins to display yarn and macrame, in addition to holding paper files. I did have to resize the hanging folders, as they were a little too big to fit in the bins, but they do fit a standard letter size paper perfectly!

To store some of my more used items, I’m utilizing these metal underbed baskets. One basket holds all of my Cricut vinyl rolls and tools while the other one holds all of the packaging supplies I use every day. I love these because they are so easy to just pull out and move to the table when needed!

The very top shelf of the IKEA shelves has limited space so I’m using these short, clear all-purpose trays to hold items like pens, cards and my planner that I use daily. For all of my writing utensils and small odds and ends, I’m using these stacking pencil boxes.

Lastly, I didn’t forget about the built-in wire shelf! I added these zippered storage cases to hold shipping supplies I don’t use often like bubble wrap, paper and small boxes.

The other side of my closet, not photographed, is where I store bigger shipping boxes, lights and extra decor.

LABEL & ORGANIZE

To make sure I knew where everything was, I created labels with my Cricut! I used removable vinyl in the colors Whispering Blue and White, along with the smoothing (scraper) tool and this transfer tape! If you don’t have a cutting machine, you can also purchase labels that you can write directly on.

I am so happy with how this closet organization project turned out! I took the time to downsize the items I had and figure out what containers would work best for my space. I purchased all of the storage pieces slowly, so it wasn’t one huge cost upfront!

At the end of the day, make sure you are creating a system that works for you and your home!

TIPS:

  1. Pull everything out of your space first, then go through and decide what you would like to keep.
  2. Categorize the items you are keeping. This will help you figure out what type of storage containers you will need.
  3. Add labels to your bins so you can easily find what you need!
  4. Take your time adding containers that work for you and keep an eye out for sales!
