Plaid and pups are the perfect combination for fall!
I’ve been wanting to make my own dog bandanas for the longest time. I knew it would be a pretty easy afternoon project, but I just never set aside the time to do it. So, when I realized that I hadn’t shared any DIY’s for pets here on my blog, it seemed like the perfect time to finally make those cute bandanas!
For this DIY we’ll be making reversible flannel bandanas — and don’t worry, I have both sew and no-sew options for you!
WHAT YOU WILL NEED
PLAID FLANNEL FABRIC | SCISSORS | TAPE MEASURE | SEWING MACHINE OR IRON-ON FUSING WEB
HOW TO
STEP 1
Measure your pet’s neck.
Add 6-8″ to that measurement to create extra length for tying the bandana on.
Both of my dogs’ had a neck size of 22″, so I planned on the bandana being 28″ wide. Since the fabric I used was thicker, I should have added 8″ to the initial measurement to allow a little more space for double knotting.
STEP 2
Next, figure out the height of the bandana (from the center of the neck to the point) based on your pet’s size. This measurement could be anywhere from 4-15″.
I chose a length of 11″ for my dogs, which ended up being a great fit. The fabric had room for bunching and folding without looking too small. If you are unsure what size to go with, make the bandana larger and then you can always roll or fold it to a smaller size!
STEP 3
With those two measurements, cut a rectangular piece out of the fabric. Don’t forget to add a little extra space for the seam allowance!
For example, I wanted my finished bandanas to be 11″ tall x 28″ wide. I added 0.5″ to each side for the seam allowance, so the measurement I cut out of the fabric was 12″ x 29″.
Also, you’ll want to make sure you are using flannel fabric for this DIY. The fabric should have the same print and texture on both sides, as well as the ability to be fringed, which you will need to do for the no-sew method.
STEP 4
Fold your rectangular piece of fabric in half.
Cut a straight line diagonally from one corner to the other. You should now have a triangle shaped bandana!
STEP 5
Use this piece to trace and cut out the same shape from your second fabric.
From here you can choose to sew your bandana together or use the no-sew method, which you can read further below.
SEWN BANDANA
STEP 6
Place the two pieces of flannel fabric on top of each other and pin.
If you are using a different fabric that is only printed on one side, then lay the ‘correct’ or printed sides together.
STEP 7
Sew along the edges, leaving a small gap open. Trim any excess fabric off. Then, flip the fabric right-side out using the small opening and iron.
Top stitch around the edges, closing the opening as you go! All done!
NO-SEW BANDANA
STEP 6
Place the two pieces of flannel fabric together.
*For the no-sew method you will want to make sure you are using flannel fabric that we can fringe later on!
STEP 7
Add iron-on fusing web along the edges in-between the two pieces of fabric and iron.
STEP 8
Once the bandana is all together, use a seam ripper to fringe the edges of the fabric. This will hide any unevenness or fraying while adding an adorable finished look!
