I love a good DIY that can be used for both fall and Halloween — and these checkered pumpkins are just that!

The checkerboard pattern has been trending again lately, and I have to say I’m definitely into it. So, it only makes sense that I wanted to implement this classic pattern into one of my DIYs this season.

There’s no need to wait until Halloween to start decorating your pumpkins. Break out the paint and make these simple, aesthetic pumpkins for your home right now!

Supplies

PUMPKINS | PAINT | PENCIL | SPRAY SEALER

How to

Step 1 | For this project you can re-use old pumpkins, buy new or even use real ones. I’m using these paper mache pumpkins, which were surprisingly sturdy and easy to paint for the price.

You will also need craft paint, a paintbrush, a pencil and a Lazy Susan if you have one handy.

Step 2 | Paint a layer of white on your pumpkins first. This step is optional but will help brighten your next color.

Step 3 | Now you can paint the base color over the entire surface. Add a second coat if needed.

Step 4 | Grab a pencil and draw horizontal and vertical lines to create the check pattern. These lines do not have to be perfectly spaced. Using a Lazy Susan can help this process!

Step 5 | With your second paint color, fill in the squares until the checkerboard is complete. I also painted the stem with this color for a fun contrast!

Step 6 | Use a clear, matte spray sealant to protect the design.

Step 7 | You’re now ready to decorate for both fall and Halloween! Store them away at the end of the season to use every year!
