This DIY is part of my how to repurpose a holiday tablecloth series — you can read about the other pieces I created here.

This year I wanted to find some new Christmas stockings for our family, so when I was thinking of ways to reuse this holiday tablecloth, I knew the plaid pattern would make the perfect ones!

For this DIY, I will be using the plaid for the outside of the stocking and a red cotton fabric for the lining. If you want to fold the stocking over to make it cuffed, make sure the lining fabric you choose is one you would also like to see on the outside.

There will be a few layers to put together to create the stockings, so I would recommend using fabrics that don’t have a “right” or “wrong” side to them, just to make it a littler easier for you!

Also, if you don’t have a stocking at home to use as your template, there are a ton of templates online you can print out! So, grab your supplies and let’s start making your new favorite stockings!

SUPPLIES

FABRIC | SEWING MACHINE | THREAD | PINS | SCISSORS | IRON

  1. To make one stocking, you will need two plaid stocking shapes and two red stocking shapes.

I used a stocking I already had to trace and cut out a template, though you can also find a template online. Using that template, trace out one stocking shape in both the plaid and red fabric with the toe facing to the right. Now, trace out one stocking in each fabric again, but with the toe facing to the left. You should have four total stockings shapes now.

  2. Place one plaid and one red stocking shape with the “correct” sides facing each other. The toes should match up. Do the same thing with the other two shapes.

  3. Sew across the top of each pair of stocking shapes. Your stockings should look like the left photo above.

  4. Open the stockings and press the seam with an iron. You should now have two long mirrored stockings.
  1. Now set the stockings to the side for a moment so we can make the hanging loops.

Take a strip of fabric about 2×8″ of whichever fabric you choose. Fold the edges in and then fold the strip in half. Sew along the strip to close the fold.

  2. Fold the strip in half and pin it about 4″ down on the red stocking, facing towards the middle. See photo above.

Make sure the stocking is opened with the nicer side of the seam facing up. You also want to pin the loop on the side opposite of the toe. If you don’t want to add a cuff to your stocking, pin the loop closer to the seam where the two fabrics meet.
  1. Next, place the “correct” sides together, matching the fabrics with each other. The back side of the seam you sewed earlier should now be on the outside. So, you should have plaid on top of plaid and red on top of red, with the loop you just pinned in-between the two layers.
  1. Sew all the way around the outside leaving a small opening towards the bottom of the red lining side. See photo above.

Trim the fabric around the edges but not too close to the seam or it may pull through later on.

  2. Pull the fabric through the opening to make everything right side out. Iron the stocking and sew the opening closed.

  3. Now, push the red lining fabric into the plaid to make the finished stocking. If you are making a cuff, fold the cuff over and you are all done!

For the stocking with the plaid cuff, I just used the plaid fabric as the lining too! All the other steps were the same though!

I am so happy with how these stockings turned out and I cannot wait to use these every season for years to come! Share your stocking DIYs with me on Instagram @ruffandrenew and have a wonderful holiday season!
