My dogs go crazy for frozen treats! They are a fun alternative to their typical, everyday biscuits and are perfect for those hot summer days, too.
I really love making these because they take no time at all and I get to customize exactly what is going into their belly. My guys love all of the ingredients I use, but this would be a great way to sneak in some healthy fruits or veggies if you have a picky eater.
Please do your research and talk to your vet if you are ever unsure about what foods are safe for your pup to eat. Watch out for sugars and artificial sweeteners! Also, make sure to use plain, non-fat yogurt (no flavors or sugars added) and peanut butter without Xylitol.
While there are certain fruits, vegetables and other foods that are safe for your dogs to eat, they should still only be consumed in moderation. I prefer to use a small mold so my dogs don’t get upset stomachs.
Alternatively, you could also make frozen treats that use mostly water, in which case a large popsicle mold would be great and would keep your pup busy for awhile.
Remember this is completely customizable, so have fun with it!
WHAT YOU WILL NEED
A MOLD (SILICONE, ICE CUBE, POPSICLE) | A BASE (YOGURT, PEANUT BUTTER, WATER) | SOMETHING YUMMY (BANANAS, APPLES, CARROTS, PUMPKIN, TREATS, KIBBLE)
HOW TO MAKE
Pick out the mold you want to use. I had this small heart shaped mold on hand, and I love it because it makes a bunch of small treats that can be used as a snack throughout the day. The treats also come out of the silicone mold really nice and clean.
Spoon a thin layer of yogurt or peanut butter into the mold first. If you want to use peanut butter at all, this is when I would add it as it will be a little harder and messier to add later.
Pick out the goodies you want to throw in and cut them up to fit. I used bananas, carrots, skinless apples and milk bones. I randomly spread the pieces into the molds so there would be a good mix in each one.
Add more yogurt to fill in the holes and top each mold off. Throw them in the freezer, and they will be ready to enjoy in a couple hours!
You could also blend all of the ingredients together and pour it into each mold, though my pups like the surprise chunks inside. It’s like those yummy real fruit popsicles!
This is such an easy treat to make that only takes about 15 minutes from prep to clean up. Make a batch of them at the beginning of the week and then you have plenty on hand to use as needed.
Frozen treats are great to use all year long, too! Try out different combinations as the seasons change and let us know what you like to use in your own!
