Our family loves visiting the metro parks around Columbus! It’s the perfect place to get away from the city and truly enjoy some time in nature.
On our most recent trip, we went to Walnut Woods Metro Park for the first time. It’s located on the southeast side of the city in Groveport. We were most interested in checking out the Sweetgum Trail in the Tall Pines Area. This area is filled with beautiful, towering pine and sweetgum trees, which we were lucky enough to have all to ourselves!
To find the Tall Pines Area, you’ll want to park in the gravel lot off of Richardson Road, not the main Walnut Woods entrance — though you can start in the Buckeye Area and take several trails to connect all the way over to Sweetgum Trail.
Hiking, biking and pets are all allowed on this trail! The path is mostly paved, but does have some gravel portions. The entire loop is 2.6 miles or there is a connector path midway to shorten your hike.
This is an easy and beautiful hike year-round! I would highly recommend making sure your dog is on tick prevention before you go, though, as we still found ticks on our dogs even in snowy, 30 degree weather!
The Tall Pines is definitely a unique spot in Columbus and a must do if you live in the area!
