I have another DIY garland for you guys today!

I really love the cute and not-so-spooky colors that have started to become popular for Halloween and wanted to give it a try for this project.

So, I found some fun purple and silver star fabric at the craft store and headed home to try a new style of garland for me — one made mostly of fabric. Don’t worry, I made sure to add some bats and ghosts to really give it the Halloween feel, while still keeping it super cute!

Try it out for yourself, let’s get crafting!

WHAT YOU WILL NEED

FABRIC | CARDSTOCK | SCISSORS | YARN | PAINT | NEEDLE + THREAD

HOW TO

  1. Pick out an assortment of fabric. I chose three different fabrics and had them cut at 1/4 yard. This made a 5-foot garland with some fabric left over.

  2. Cut the fabric into thin strips, roughly 1/2 inch wide, using the 1/4 yard as your length.

  3. Now start adding the fabric to the yarn. I used a lark’s head knot, but you can make a regular knot, too, whichever is easier for you.

To help with this part, I tied my yarn between two chairs and made sure the line was taut. Then, I attached the fabric strips in a repeating pattern until I had a garland about 5 feet long.

  4. Next, you’ll need to make the ghost, bat and star cutouts. You can free-hand these or search Pinterest like I did for free printable templates. I found these absolutely adorable ghosts from Designs By Miss Mandee and these cute multi-sized bats from The Faux Martha.

  5. Print your templates, cut them out and trace each one right onto the black and white cardstock. I wanted to add some color to that star cutouts, so I painted those a light purple to tie in perfectly with the fabric strips.

  6. To attach the cutouts to the garland, I used a needle to poke a hole through the paper and tied it to the yarn with thread.

Lastly, make a looped knot at each end of the yarn so you can hang it around your home. This DIY turned out to be so cute and fun, I’ll definitely be using it year after year!
