Thrifting is one of my all-time favorite hobbies!

I love the thrill of the hunt so much so that you’ll often find me skimming the racks and digging through shelves several days out of the week. The possibility of finding my new favorite thing on a random weekday morning keeps me going each and every time!

So, I wanted to share some of my favorite tips I use when thrifting to ensure I’m spending my time – and money – wisely.

BEFORE YOU GO

1. Comfort is key! Wear whatever you feel most comfortable in and bring a bag that won’t get in your way. Don’t forget the extras like headphones, a hair tie and your favorite drink and snacks — but maybe keep the food in your car for now 😉

2. Follow your favorite thrift stores on social media! This is the best way to never miss out on a big sale and even see new inventory. They’ll typically promote their regular sales on top of letting you know about any last-minute ones.

3. Make a game plan. Thrift stores have an overwhelmingly large amount of inventory, which typically results in overstuffed racks and jumbled shelves. It can make it hard to shop and even remember what you were interested in finding. Try to make a list of items you would like to find before going into the store in order to make the best of your trip.

LET’S THRIFT!

IN THE STORE

4. Check the tags! The very first thing I do when I get into the store is check which color tags are on sale for the week. I also look to see what the newest color tag being put out on the floor is, which will come in handy if you are limited on time!

5. Grab a cart! This seems like an obvious one, but I enjoy shopping so much more when I remember to snag a cart right when I walk in the door. It makes hunting through racks and shelves more relaxing, frees up my hands and helps me easily go through all of my finds. I also love that it gives me a little extra personal space and prevents other shoppers from getting too close. If you know you know 😉

6. Shop the new racks first! I always head to the newly rolled-out home decor carts and clothing racks right when I get into the store. This is the perfect chance to find a gem before items get picked through.

I have never had a problem doing this, employees typically encourage it because it’s less they have to put away. However, I have been to some stores that are very serious about not letting anyone shop these racks, so always double check if you are unfamiliar with the store.

7. Look closely! When looking through the home goods section, check the highest, lowest and deepest parts of the shelves. Some of the best items can be easily hidden behind or underneath other knick knacks.

For clothing, check the go-back rack and endcaps near the fitting rooms for items that someone else has already sourced but decided not to purchase. You can usually find some great quality items in these spots!

8. Always check over your items for damage! Take your cart to a window and inspect each item in the natural light. You’ll want to look specifically at seams near the armpits, neckline, pockets and cuffs. Also, don’t forget to check for stains, fading, discoloration and broken zippers. Many stores are final sale, so take the time to check your items before you buy!

9. If you are limited on time, search for those new color tags! Skip over items you may have already seen during previous trips and go straight for the new goods put out more recently, like those newly rolled out racks and carts.

MY BIGGEST TIP

10. Have fun and go often! The more you thrift the better your chances are of finding all the good things. Best of luck!
