Let’s kick off spring with two cute and colorful DIY garlands!

Garlands are such a fun way to decorate your space each season. Drape them across a shelf or mantle, toss them on your coffee table or even use them in your party decor — they’re sure to spice up any spot in your home!

Making your very own garland can be so fun and budget-friendly, too. Add tassels, beads, pom poms, felt balls or any other small items to make the perfect piece for you.

Now it’s time to gather your supplies and start creating!

What you will need

WOOD BEADS | YARN | COTTON CORD | POM POM MAKER | PAINT | SKEWERS | PAINT BRUSH | NEEDLE | SCISSORS

How to make a beaded tassel garland

  1. To make the beaded tassel garland, you will need wood beads, cotton cord, paint, skewers, a paint brush, scissors, a needle and an empty container. The garland I created is just under 5 feet long, using 12 tassels and 87 beads.

  2. Start by prepping your wood beads for painting. Place all of your beads onto wood skewers and rest the skewer across an empty container. This will allow you to paint all the way around the bead at once and also leave room for drying.

  3. Pick out some fun spring colored paint! I used six pastels colors (yellow, green, blue, teal, pink and purple), and I think they ended up looking so good together!

  4. Paint your beads. Make sure to keep track of how many beads need to be painted with each color.

  5. While your beads dry, start making the tassels. I used cotton cord and brushed a couple of strands together to get the thickness I wanted. You could also use colorful yarn here, too!

  6. It’s time to make the garland strand! Use a needle to help guide your string through the wood beads easily. Create whatever pattern of wood beads and tassels that makes you happy! My garland follows a pattern of:

    3 colored beads — 2 plain wood beads — 1 tassel — 2 plain wood beads — 3 colored beads

  7. Now you can use your finished garland anywhere in your home!

How to make a pom pom garland

  1. For the pom pom garland, you will need a pom pom maker, yarn, string, a needle and scissors. This garland is pretty simple to create, with mine consisting of only seven large pom poms!

  2. Use a variety of colored and textured yarn and wrap it around the different arms of the pom pom maker (I used the largest one for this DIY).

  3. Follow the directions of your pom pom maker to cut and tie everything properly.

  4. Once your pom pom is made, use scissors to trim any stray pieces.

  5. To make the garland, tie a needle to your string and thread it through the center of the pom pom. Do this for each one. If you feel like the pom poms are moving too much, though, you can make a small knot on each side of the pom to help hold it in place.

  6. All done! Hang up your garland and enjoy this fun pop of spring color in your home!
