My favorite little cabinet finally got a small makeover!

I’ve had this white media cabinet for more than 10 years and I am still so in love with it to this day! It’s a very well-made piece of furniture and has been perfect to use as both a TV console and as a display cabinet. After so many years of continuous use, though, it was definitely in need of some TLC.

I was originally going to only give the cabinet a fresh coat of paint, but now that I’m using it as extra craft storage, I also wanted to cover the glass to hide all of my supplies. Cane webbing was my first choice, but it was a little pricey and I wasn’t sure if I would like the look of it with the other decor in my room.

So, I stopped by the craft store and checked out the fabric section. I ended up finding some burlap that would be perfect to cover the glass and give a similar look to the cane webbing. I bought one yard of burlap (which was on sale, though there are always coupons) for a grand total of $2.40!

I wanted to keep the cabinet a bright white, so I used a white paint I found in the returns and reject section at the hardware store for 50 cents. I also added a pop of blue on the inside using paint I already had at home.

SUPPLIES

Once I had all of my supplies, I started with cleaning and sanding the cabinet. I then painted the inside with two coats of blue and about three coats of white on the outside and the doors. I followed up with matte polycrylic to seal everything.

I decided to keep the glass in the cabinet because down the road I would love to use it as a display cabinet again and I didn’t want to risk breaking the glass if I stored it elsewhere. So, for this project I placed the burlap directly over the glass!

Covering the glass with the burlap was a pretty simple process. First, I removed and cleaned all of the glass from the doors, then I used one of the glass pieces to trace and cut out the burlap.

I hot glued the burlap around the edges of the glass and placed it back into the door so the burlap was facing out. I repeated this for each glass window and that was it!

This was a super easy and affordable makeover of this adorable cabinet. I love how it looks in my bedroom and how it flows perfectly with all of my decor. One of my favorite DIY’s to date!

Update!

Hi there again! I made a few changes to this cabinet, so I wanted to make sure to come back and update y’all in this post!

It beens over a year since I originally did this DIY, and while I loved the overall look of it, the brown/orange burlap just wasn’t for me. I decided it was time to finally make some changes to create what I had always envisioned.

I made a quick run to the craft store to find a lighter burlap fabric and came home successful. The new cream-colored burlap was almost perfect — it just needed a little something to tone down the hints of yellow. So, I made a stain consisting of white and beige acrylic paints along with a small amount of water and applied it all over the fabric with a foam brush.

Before installing the fabric, I ironed it, this time spraying the fabric with water and placing a towel over it to get all of those wrinkles out.

Another change I made was how I attached the burlap into the doors. I took the glass out completely and used hot glue around each frame to hold the fabric. Staples would have been much easier, but my staple gun sadly wouldn’t fit on the inside edge of the door frames.

This simple change has made a huge difference, and I am so, so happy with how it turned out!
