Today, I’m sharing a fun project that you can do at home in just a couple of hours!

We’re going to make adorable little wall hangings out of clay! It’s really easy to create them, and you get to customize the shape, color and overall design of each one.

Even though most stores aren’t open, you can still order your supplies online. I used about half of the clay in a one-pound package and it made the five wall hangings you’ll see below. Make sure to use clay that can be baked in the oven to harden. Once you get everything you need, we can get started!

WHAT YOU WILL NEED

OVEN-BAKE CLAY | A STRAW (SOMETHING TO MAKE HOLES) | ROLLING PIN OR FLAT OBJECT (TO FLATTEN CLAY) | OVEN-SAFE GLASS DISH | ACRYLIC PAINT | PAINT BRUSH | STRING | WOOD BEADS

HOW TO MAKE IT

  1. Break off small pieces of clay from the block and knead to soften.
  2. Once softened, start shaping your clay. This is where you can get creative with it! You could use a rolling pin and shaping tools if you have those available — but I did not have those, so this is how I made all of my shapes:
    • To make a circle: I rolled a small piece of clay into a ball with my hands. I then placed it in a ziplock bag (to keep it from sticking to the table) and flattened it down with a cup. Use a cup that doesn’t have indents or marking on the bottom or it will transfer to your clay. Then remove from the bag and you have your circle!
    • To make a half circle: Follow the same step above. Use a knife to cut the circle in half. That’s it!
    • To make a moon shape: Follow the steps to make a circle. Use the open side of the cup to cut into the circle and create the moon!
    • To make the oblong shape: Roll a piece of clay back and forth in-between your hands, like you’re making a snake. Then use the side of the cup to roll it over the length of the clay and flatten out — giving you the oblong, not-so-perfect rectangle! I used a knife to cut a little off the ends to make them not so rounded.
  3. Now, you’ll want to use a straw or some other object to create holes on both the top and bottom of each piece, big enough so you can put whatever type of string you are using through.
  4. Place your pieces into an oven-safe glass dish and bake according to the time on your package.
  5. Allow the clay pieces to cool completely and finish the hardening process.
  6. After mine cooled, I divided up the pieces to create my hangings. I mixed and matched shapes until I had several hangings the way I wanted.
  7. Paint your pieces with acrylics and add designs!
  8. After the paint dries, you can start putting everything together. I used cotton rope and added one wood bead in-between each clay shape. Tie a loop at the top for hanging.
  9. Add a fun tail to the bottom to give it more texture and length! I did two braids, a tassel, a simple tie and a knotted one!

I love, love, love how these turned out! They fit perfectly into my boho-style craft room, and the blues look so good with the decor in the rest of my home! I had so much fun making these. I will definitely be making another clay decor piece in the near future!
